Viking ESFR Upright Sprinkler Head

January, 2001 - ESFR ALERT - The ESFR sprinkler has undoubtedly been one of, if not the greatest advance in the sprinkler industry since it’s start in the 1800’s. Their use has virtually eliminated the need for in-rack sprinklers in warehousing areas and has created a super efficient and cost effective means to improve protection for many hazardous commodities.

With all the good, there have also been many headaches for developers, installers and owners alike. The heads were only approved in a pendent configuration and the installation rules were very strict, and everything seems to be an obstruction!

Many contractors have cursed the heads due to the difficulties with installation. Owners indicated that the building had to be designed around the sprinklers rather than vice/versa. Some have questioned if the advances in protection were really worth the headaches. Matrix fully believes they were, even though we have a few more gray hairs because of them.

The flip side was the flexibility this revolutionary head brought to industry. No other head has allowed so many configurations, and differing commodities, to be so well protected by a single type of protection system with a common design.

Matrix is happy to report that a new type of ESFR head, developed by Viking Sprinkler, has received approval from FM Global, and we believe it will provide answers to many of the old problems with ESFR protection. This head is the first ESFR UPRIGHT HEAD, and it’s approval parameters offer significant improvements with regard to flexibility of installation and reducing the number of obstruction issues. There are still restrictions, and the installation guidelines as published by VIKING and the FM Global Engineering Bulletin 14-00 should be strictly adhered to.
